Playing team sports can benefit mental health

It is no surprise to most people that regular exercise is beneficial for the physical health and psychological wellbeing of children, teenagers and young adults.

Recent research undertaken by The Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK indicates that exercise not only helps us to manage mental health concerns, but it can be preventative too.

Exercise on prescription

The Royal College of Psychiatrists advocates exercise on prescription for young people challenged by mental health issues.

The Wave Programs are designed to incorporate team sports and group activities into our daily schedules.

Research indicates a 20–30% reduction in symptoms of depression in young people who take part in daily exercise.

Motivation and achievement

Mental health concerns are often accompanied by periods of isolation. Early recovery can be a time of increased psychological challenges, often accompanied by a decreased interest in physical activities. Our team of recovery coaches and trainers encourage and support active involvement for all.

Mindful movement

At The Wave, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to connect with themselves and others through movement.

We are also aware that some of our young people will have had additional challenges around food-, body- and exercise-related issues. Our team takes the time to understand each individual’s needs, to ensure a healthy balance of exercise and nutrition to help them take steps forward into mindful movement and group activities.

Connection is teamwork

Being part of a team is not easy for everyone. We have a superb team of experts who are on hand to organise, cheer and referee.

At The Wave, our young people can enjoy a variety of team and individual sporting challenges, including:

  • Futsal
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Badminton
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Water polo.

Team sports at The Wave

At The Wave, our young people can participate in, and enjoy, a full weekly program of activities.

Wednesday afternoons and weekends are filled with a wide range of options for sports and team games. You will also find impromptu games and team events hosted by our young adults during lunchtimes and evenings.

Our team of chefs are current basketball league champions!
