Education for young people

Education for young people who have challenges with eating disorders, mental health or addiction, is important for so many reasons. But this education has to be the right sort and take the right approach, so often missing from mainstream education. Parents and families often describe the difficulties that they have faced in regular schools.

Education is one of the aspects of everyday life that suffers disruption from adverse childhood experiences, mental health and behavioural challenges. These may include relocation, bullying, problems with behaviour, relationship breakdown, family separation, divorce or issues within the school community. Not going to school or attending on a sporadic basis, either long or short term, because of these experiences and challenges impacts both the learning process and its outcomes. The challenge faced by those teenagers considering returning to education is therefore considerable.

Typical issues suffered by young people include low motivation, loss of interest, absence from school, conflict at school and falling grades. Parents may not understand these problems, and as a result, education, study and future plans can be a source of conflict in families. It’s therefore vital to build confidence, self-worth and engagement to create a solid base on which to build a more stable future for both young people and the families they form part of.

About Education at The Wave Clinic

First Steps

At The Wave, we understand the need to create this solid base to build a stable future, which is why education forms a central part of out core programmes. We run the only Teen Treatment Programme to incorporate Personal Learning Plans (PLP) for teenagers and young people in residential care. We implement PLP during the residential treatment week. However, education programmes can only be successful if there is behavioural and mental health wellness and the first steps towards this lie in orientation and stability. That is why our clinical and medical teams ensure a sustained period of stability for all young people before starting any educational programmes.

Academic & Vocational Education

Once we have ensured emotional and behavioural stability, we then incorporate PLP. These exclusive programmes ensure that teenagers and young adults are able to pick up where they left off.

We work in conjuction with the young person’s current place of education (school, college or educational facility) to continue with the current curriculum requirements. The flexibility of our PLP allows us to accomodate individual learning plans with support from our expert in-house tutors. All are university lecturers, professional educators or Special Educational Needs (SEN) specialists. This also means we can bridge the British Curriculum, IB study routes, Canadian Education System and standard educational requirements for the USA and Australia.

Personalized One-To-One & Group Tuition

Teenagers with a disrupted education, who have missed a substantial amount of schooling or changed schools several times may feel that they are falling behind their peer group. This often leads to a lack of self-confidence and a drop in self-esteem.Our expert team works to minimise the impact of lower self-esteem by bridging the knowledge gap through a variety of short courses, taken online with one to one support and plenty of encouragement. Our source for these courses are UK universities with full online learning to provide a great start to reintroducing success and creative learning styles. We also incorporate group learning through hands-on and online study, group projects and assignments. This creates a supportive, non-competitive environment for understanding through enquiry.

Additional Educational Needs

For those teenagers and young people who do not find learning easy or have additional challenges or SEN, we offer additional one-to-one support. We do this always within a framework that maintains inclusion and provides opportunities at the right level to boost confidence and self-awareness in learning. Our educational psychologists are available to provide detailed reports for parents and families, future schools or as an overview on potential attainment.
