Affective (Mood) Disorders In Teens and Young People

Affective Disorders or Mood Disorders are complex neuropsychiatric disorders that can be divided in two types of presentations in teens and young people. They are serious mental health conditions that can affect home, school and relationships.

Young people who have been diagnosed with affective disorders will often require expert treatment by Adolescent Mental Health Teams with specialist training in the care of young people. The Wave Team have extensive experience in the care of young people diagnosed with affective or mood disorders and provide medium/long term programs in a residential setting, followed by stepped down care in independent living and community settings. Let our specialists guide your young person on their journey to recovery in a supportive residential setting and beyond.

Depression

Also known as clinical depression, major depression, major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder and unipolar depression. Depressive disorders can also include premenstrual dysphoric disorder in girls and women and dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder).

Though it’s often thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, the reality is that depression can develop after a difficult event or without a clear reason. If a young person is feeling down, it is important that they understand these feelings won’t last forever. There is help and support available to treat depression so they can feel like themselves again.

At The Wave, we know that no two cases of depression are the same, so all treatment programmes are personalized to suit each person’s specific needs and goals. Our holistic programmes combine evidence-based therapies with life skill development and self-care techniques. We make the most of the incredible natural scenery around our centre to offer enriching experiences that heal and inspire.

Bipolar Disorder

Which used to be known as manic depression, is a pattern of mood that moves between mania and depression. Bipolar Disorders include; bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, cyclothymic disorder and substance/medication-induced bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a depressive disorder that leaves young people experiencing high and low moods that last from a few days to several weeks. Young people with bipolar experience mood changes that impact their daily lives and are much more severe than teenagers typically experience.

Symptoms of bipolar usually appear between the ages of 15 and 19. Manic – or hypomanic – episodes may involve racing thoughts, energy, increased self-confidence, and sometimes psychosis. Depressive episodes are characterised by feelings of despair, hopelessness, and low mood.

“I came to The Wave about 2 ½ years ago, and I can’t speak highly enough about their service, support, and love I received (and still do) from the team. They have helped me build stable foundations for a life that now feels worth living. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without their amazing help, and I am lucky enough to call them my family.”
